That amber horseshoe symbol on your dashboard is the TPMS light. Here's what it's telling you, how to fix it in five minutes, and how to reset it for your car.

Quick answer

The amber symbol that looks like a flat tyre with an exclamation mark is your tyre pressure light (TPMS light). It means at least one tyre is low on air, usually about 25% below the recommended pressure. Pull over safely, check all four tyres with a gauge and pump them up to the pressure on the sticker inside the driver's door. The light normally goes off after a few minutes of driving.

What the Tyre Pressure Light Looks Like

The tyre pressure monitoring system warning light is a yellow or amber horseshoe shape (the cross-section of a tyre) with "!" in the middle. Some cars show "TPMS", "TPWS" or "LOW TIRE" in text instead. Many drivers call it the flat tire sign or simply the tyre light.

It's a warning, not an emergency like the red oil or temperature lights. But it should never be ignored. Here's how to read it:

How to Fix the Tyre Pressure Light in 5 Minutes

Pull over somewhere safe and look at all four tyres. If one is visibly flat, fit the spare or call roadside assistance.
Find your correct tyre pressure. It's on a sticker inside the driver's door jamb, inside the fuel flap or in the owner's manual. Most cars sit between 30 and 36 psi (about 210–250 kPa). Don't use the "max pressure" on the sidewall. See our guide to finding the right PSI.
Check the pressures cold: before driving, or after the car has been parked for at least 3 hours. Warm tyres read higher.
Inflate every tyre to the recommended pressure, including ones that look fine. 1 psi is about 6.9 kPa, so 32 psi is about 220 kPa.
Drive for 10–20 minutes above 25 km/h. Most systems re-check the tyres and turn the light off on their own.

Why Your Tyre Pressure Light Came On

Cold mornings

Pressure drops about 1 psi for every 5–6 °C fall. That's why the light shows on a cold Auckland morning and is gone by lunch.

A slow puncture

A nail or screw can leak air over days. If one tyre keeps going down, this is the likely cause.

Leaking valve or bead

Old valve stems, corroded mag wheels and damaged rims all leak slowly.

Natural air loss

Japanese import sensors

For a short, slow drive to a service station or tyre shop, usually yes, as long as no tyre looks flat. Driving for days on low tyre pressure is not safe.

Low tyre pressure lengthens braking distance, makes the car less stable in the wet and can cause a blowout at motorway speed. It also wears tyres faster and uses more fuel. If the car pulls to one side, the steering feels heavy or you hear flapping, stop.

Running low pressures for a while can also cause uneven wear. If the car still pulls after you've fixed the pressures, book a wheel alignment.

How to Reset the Tyre Pressure Light by Make and Model

Inflate all tyres to the correct pressure first. A reset with low tyres just brings the light back. Steps vary by year, so check your owner's manual if your menu looks different.

Where to Find Your Tyre Size

Your tyre size is written in two places, so you almost can't miss it. The easiest spot is on the tyre itself. The other spot is a sticker inside your car that tells you the size the manufacturer recommends.

On the Tyre Sidewall

The outer wall of every tyre, the part you can see from outside the car, has a row of numbers and letters printed or raised into the rubber. That's your tyre size.

Inside the Driver's Door

Open the driver's door and look at the door frame or door pillar, the part you see when the door is open. There's a sticker with the correct tyre size for your car.

In the Owner's Manual

Every car comes with a manual, usually kept in the glovebox. It lists the correct tyre size under a section called "tyres" or "wheels and tyres."

Inside the Fuel Flap

Some cars, especially older models, print the tyre size on a small sticker inside the fuel filler flap instead of the door frame.

Step by Step: Find Your Tyre Size in 3 Steps

Open the driver's door

Stand next to the driver's seat and open the door all the way, so you can see the door frame where the door normally closes shut.
Look for the white or yellow sticker

Somewhere on that frame, usually around waist height, there's a sticker with several rows of small text and numbers. Look for the row labelled "tyre" or "tire."
Read the code left to right

You'll see something like 205/55R16. That's your tyre size, in the exact order: width, profile, construction, rim size. Write it down or take a photo with your phone.

No door sticker or can't read it? Look on the tyre itself instead. Kneel down next to any tyre and read the raised lettering around the outer sidewall, the same numbers are printed there too.

Where exactly is the tyre size written?

On the outer sidewall of every tyre, and on a sticker inside the driver's door frame. Some cars also print it inside the fuel flap or in the owner's manual.

What do the numbers 205/55R16 actually mean?

205 is the tyre width in millimetres, 55 is the sidewall height as a percentage of that width, R means radial construction, and 16 is the rim diameter in inches.

Can I just use the size on my current tyre?

Usually yes, as long as it's an original-fit tyre and not the space-saver spare. If your current tyres don't match the door sticker, always trust the door sticker.

Do all four tyres have to be the same size?

Not always. Most cars use one size all round, but some performance and sports cars fit a wider size at the rear than the front. Always check each tyre.

Check the Door Jamb, Not the Tyre

Open the driver's door and look at the sticker on the door jamb or pillar. This placard shows the pressure your manufacturer actually recommends for your car, not the maximum pressure moulded into the tyre's sidewall, which is a different number entirely.

Check the Owner's Manual

If the door sticker is faded or missing, your owner's manual will list the same figures, usually with separate numbers for front and rear, and sometimes a higher figure for full load or towing.

What Happens If Pressure Is Wrong

Underinflated tyres flex more as they roll, which builds up heat, wears the outer edges of the tread faster, increases fuel consumption, and raises the risk of a blowout, especially at motorway speed.

Overinflated tyres ride harder, wear the centre of the tread faster than the edges, and reduce the amount of tyre actually gripping the road, which matters most in the wet.

Tyres don't usually fail all at once, they wear down gradually, which makes it easy to miss the warning signs until you're standing at a WOF re-check wondering why you failed. Here are the 7 signs worth checking for, and what each one means for your safety and your Warrant of Fitness.

Tread Depth Near the Legal Minimum

The legal minimum tread depth in New Zealand is 1.5mm, measured within the principal grooves. Most tyres have built-in wear indicators that become flush with the tread once you've hit the limit.

Simple home check: place a 20 cent coin into the tread groove. If you can see the rim of the coin above the rubber, your tread is getting low.

Will fail WOF below 1.5mm

Cracks in the Sidewall

Small cracks along the sidewall, sometimes called weather checking, are usually a sign the rubber has started to age and lose flexibility, even on tyres with plenty of tread left.

Can fail WOF depending on severity

Bulges or Blisters

A bulge means the internal structure has been damaged, usually from a pothole or kerb strike, and the tyre can no longer hold air safely at that point. This needs attention straight away.

Uneven or Patchy Wear
