How to Check Your Tyre Size (It's Really Easy)

Finding your correct tyre size is very easy, it takes less than a minute, with no tools and no guesswork required. This guide shows you exactly where to look and how to read the numbers, step by step, in plain and simple language.

Where to Find Your Tyre Size

Your tyre size is written in two places, so you almost can't miss it. The easiest spot is on the tyre itself. The other spot is a sticker inside your car that tells you the size the manufacturer recommends.

The outer wall of every tyre, the part you can see from outside the car, has a row of numbers and letters printed or raised into the rubber. That's your tyre size.

Step by Step: Find Your Tyre Size in 3 Steps

  1. Open the driver's door

    Stand next to the driver's seat and open the door all the way, so you can see the door frame where the door normally closes shut.

  2. Look for the white or yellow sticker

    Somewhere on that frame, usually around waist height, there's a sticker with several rows of small text and numbers. Look for the row labelled "tyre" or "tire."

  3. Read the code left to right

    You'll see something like 205/55R16. That's your tyre size, in the exact order: width, profile, construction, rim size. Write it down or take a photo with your phone.

No door sticker or can't read it? Look on the tyre itself instead. Kneel down next to any tyre and read the raised lettering around the outer sidewall, the same numbers are printed there too.

Open the driver's door and look at the sticker on the door jamb or pillar. This placard shows the pressure your manufacturer actually recommends for your car, not the maximum pressure moulded into the tyre's sidewall, which is a different number entirely.

What Happens If Pressure Is Wrong

Underinflated tyres flex more as they roll, which builds up heat, wears the outer edges of the tread faster, increases fuel consumption, and raises the risk of a blowout, especially at motorway speed.

Overinflated tyres ride harder, wear the centre of the tread faster than the edges, and reduce the amount of tyre actually gripping the road, which matters most in the wet.

The legal minimum tread depth in New Zealand is 1.5mm, measured within the principal grooves. Most tyres have built-in wear indicators that become flush with the tread once you've hit the limit.
